The protagonist of this paper is Jerzy Godziszewski (1935–2016), an outstanding pianist, teacher and Doctor honoris causa of the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, laureate of the Chopin Competition in 1960.

In the artist’s repertoire, the oeuvre of Karol Szymanowski had a special place. On the centennial of the composer’s birth (1982), Jerzy Godziszewski gave a public performance of all the piano works by the Polish composer, while the recording, one of the fruits of the event, was honoured with the Fryderyk – the most prestigious award bestowed by the Polish phonographic industry.

The material below is a discussion of the interpretations of a selection of Szymanowski’s works as performed by Jerzy Godziszewski, alongside reviews and radio programmes dedicated to the pianist. Another valuable piece of memorabilia of the artist is the fragments of his archival interviews for the Polish Radio, as well as – thus far unpublished – fragments of his performances at the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz.
