Is a graphic score merely a manner of writing new music, or perhaps it has features of an independent genre? Is it a kind of musical notation? Does it constitute a coherent semiotic system? Is there and if so what is the extent of a dependence between the notation and music itself?

These questions opened the presentation of Assistant Professor Aleksandra Kłaput-Wiśniewska, PhD, that was devoted to the issues related to graphic scores. The paper had its premiere at the conference titled Written Music – Materials and Composers’ Legacies, organised by the Studio of Musical Culture and Folklore Studies at The Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music, in Bydgoszcz, in the autumn of 2020.

In her presentation, Professor Aleksandra Kłaput-Wiśniewska outlined the fundamental aspects related to the phenomenon of graphic scores, considered also in terms of its related notions of musicography and graphic music. The author focused particularly on Polish musicological and compositional thought as represented by a ‘classic’ of the avant-garde – Bogusław Schaeffer, and subsequently attempted to introduce the works of a slightly mysterious and forgotten figure – Ewa Synowiec.
