Virtual instruments are gaining popularity in todays compositional activity. In the paper below, Jędrzej Rochecki outlines the issues related to creating virtual sound copies of the J.F. Mary piano, built at the outset of the nineteenth century. The author has been carrying out his work as part of a project entailing the analysis and comparison of the sound of historical pianos with their contemporary reproductions, performed within the framework of the programme of the Regional Initiative of Excellence, at the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz.
